About Goslings Papa Seal Single Barrel Bermuda Rum 2020 Release

The 2020 Edition of their Papa Seal Rum continues in the vein of its ultra-premium single barrel predecessor, which has garnered numerous awards, including a 2019 Rum of The Year by the Caribbean Journal and 92 points by Tasting Panel. It was named after the CEO and father of the Goslings family of rum-makers, Malcolm Gosling, known among family and friends as "Papa Seal". This second release is a blend of pot and column-still rums that have spent between 10 and 21 years in hand-selected once-used medium-char bourbon barrels.

After blending, the liquid spends an additional 2 years in American white oak, letting the aromas and flavors marry in the humid and salty air of Bermuda. After filtration, the rum is bottled at 83 proof. Only 1500 bottles of this mellow and elegant rum were produced for the US market in 2020. Each cask was carefully hand-picked, every bottle meticulously bottled and labeled by hand. This expression is one of the few single barrel rums available on the market today.

About Goslings

The story of Goslings Rum is a serendipitous one, dating as far back as 1806, when James Gosling ventured out to sea at the request of his father. Gosling was heading towards Virginia, equipped with wines and spirits worth 10,000 pounds Sterling. 91 days into the trip the charter on the ship Mercury ran out, forcing Gosling to settle in Bermuda. Eventually he decided to open a wine and spirits shop on the island, the rest is history.

Upon his return to England in 1824 James Gosling opened a shop with his brother Ambrose, which has been in the Gosling family ever since. Their first rum, the Black Seal, was produced nearly half a century later in 1863. Produced in Bermuda, the Black Seal is synonymous with the island. Today, the family business is in the 7th genera tion of Goslings, who continue to lead company, as the largest exporter of any Bermuda made product. Goslings is also the only company that blends and bottles on the island.

Over a century and a half later, the family’s patriarch Malcolm Gosling made the decision to reveal the secrets of their family’s successful Caribbean elixir. Goslings Family Reserve Rum is crafted from the same blend of ingredients as their flagship Black Seal Rum. The differentiating factor is the increased amount of time the rum spends inside of the ex-bourbon oak barrels, giving it more complexity and overall depth.

About Daftmill

Situated in the Howe of Fife, a valley in Scotland, Daftmill is a family farm that mainly grows cereals and potatoes and rears cattle. It is named after a local stream, called "The Daft Burn", which plays a trick on the eye when viewed from a certain point, making it seem as if the river is running uphill. The farm has been operational for 6 generations but it wasn't until more recently that brothers Ian and Francis Cuthbert ― whisky lovers and perfectionists ― finally opened the doors of the distillery that was long in coming.

Their own malted barley was on hand, so was an artesian spring, and an old mill building was converted into a distillery in 2004 and 2005. All the labor and equipment ― apart from their stills from Forsyths in Rothes ― came from local craftsmen. It was on November 30, 2005 that they received their license at last. The first whisky was distilled 2 weeks later. Then came the waiting game, as they expected that their spirits would not reach the market before they have aged for at least a decade. Indeed, they began releasing the whisky in 2018 at 12 years of age.

Using their own farm-grown barley and artesian-well water they craft fine Lowlands whisky with minimal waste where all the magic happens within a 5-mile radius of the farm. Daftmill is a farm first and distillery second, as the latter only operates during midsummer and winter, during the farm's quiet periods ― a practice that used to be the norm in Scotland, but has become ext remely uncommon in the past century. This means that all their spirits come in super-limited quantities.

About Scotch

Scotch is the most popular whisky in the world and is considered the king of them all! There are five whisky regions in Scotland (six if you count the not officially recognized Islands), and each of them produces spirits with unique properties and distinct tasting notes. (The type of grain used determents the type of the scotch.)

Malt whisky is made of malted barley, and grain whisky uses other grains like corn or wheat. Most of the time, a whisky is blended from different distilleries hence the name blended scotch, but if a malt whisky is produced in a single distillery, we get something extraordinary called a single malt.

About The Macallan

Situated on a ridge above the banks of the River Spey, the Easter Elchies House has been the spiritual home of The Macallan for over three centuries. In 1820, Alexander Reid sowed the fields surrounding the rented home with barley and established the first licensed distillery on the estate, which he named Macallan after an ancient church that had been destroyed by fire during the 15th century. In the slow winter days, Reid would ferment and distill his excess grains into whisky, which was often drunk straight from the still or sold to travelers passing through the town.

Today, the Macallan Estate encompasses 370 acres, 95 of which are devoted to the production of the Macallan Estate's Minstrel barley (a single acre produces about 2.5 tons of barley each year, enough to yield 1,800 bottles of The Macallan). In addition, the distillery contracts with farmers to purchase barley that is low in nitrogen and high in starch, resulting in a rich and oily whisky.

After the harvest, the barley is malted and mashed in one of The Macallan's two mash tuns, a process that takes between four and eight hours. Then, the barley is fermented with a specially cultured yeast before being distilled twice through The Macallan's copper-pot stills. The copper comprising the stills acts as a catalyst and enhances the formation of sweet esters while minimizing impurities such as sulfur. In addition, the curiously small stills — some of "the smallest stills within the Scotch whisky industry," according to production manager Alexander Tweedie — produce a whisky with a heavy, oily flavor. Following distillation, The Macallan distillers remove the heads and tails of the whisky and collect approximately 16% of the spirit to fill into casks for maturation. This "cut," which is among the highest of any Scottish distillery, results in a more full-bodied and richer whisky.

About Michter's 25 Year Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

In the 18th century, a Swiss Mennonite farmer by the name of John Shenk settled his family near Pennsylvania's Blue Mountain Valley. Within a few years, Shenk was harvesting more grains that he could sell, and so he began distilling the excess grains into whiskey. Shenk's distillery, which was eventually named Michter's Distillery, became the United States' first distilling company. Just two decades after Shenk opened the doors to his distillery, General George Washington began purchasing Michter's Distillery Whiskey in order to fortify his men as they camped through a long and brutal winter at Valley Forge. Michter's Distillery, as the saying goes, was the whiskey that warmed the American Revolution.

The passage of Prohibition in 1919 forced Michter's Distillery, along with nearly every other distillery in the United States, to close. In the early 1990s however, Joseph J. Magliocco teamed up with Richard Newman in an effort to resurrect the brand. "When we set up our whiskey program for Michter's Distillery," says Magliocco, "Dick and I wanted to get back to the 'cost be damned' roots and produce the finest whiskey possible. Our goal was to show that whiskey made in the United States could be the equal of great whiskey made anywhere in the world."

It's the two 25-year-olds that are the crown jewels in Michter's lineup, the range-topping Straight Rye and Straight Bourbon expressions. These limited-production whiskeys are available as stock permits and have spe nt a quarter of a century in the distillery's finest barrels before being granted the seal of approval by Master Distiller Dan McKee and Master of Maturation Andrea Wilson. Michter's 25 Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon is aged in new, fire-charred American white oak and is bottled at 116.2 proof. It offers great complexity and an exquisite balance of all the classic bourbon notes.

About Four Roses Small Batch Limited Edition 2020 Bourbon Whiskey

Following Prohibition, Four Roses Kentucky Straight Bourbon became the top-selling bourbon in the United States. In 1943, Seagram’s bought the distillery and a decade later, discontinued the sale of Four Roses Kentucky Straight Bourbon. In 2002, the distillery changed hands again, and the new owner brought a renewed sense of purpose and vigor to Four Roses.

A signature trait of Four Roses is their use of full transparency; they display the different distillates and recipes that go into each bottle. This showcases how the limited edition blends have evolved year after year. Historically The Four Roses Distillery has been known to use five different yeast strains and two mash bills at any given time. This means that a total of 10 different distillates can be used to blend their bourbons. Every barrel at Four Roses is labeled with a four-letter code. Each yeast strain and mash bill is identified by corresponding letters K, O, Q, F, V (for the mash bills) and E and O (for the yeast strains).

There's a special edition, small-batch bourbon that Four Roses releases every September in honor of National Bourbon Month. The 2020 release is a 111.4-proof bourbon that is bottled without chill-filtration and is crafted with a hand-picked selection of batches: a 12YO OBSV-recipe bourbon, a 12-year-old OESV, a 19-year-old OBSK, and a 16-year-old OESK. "Each batch in this year’s limited edition bottling is an exceptional whiskey that could have stood on its own as a single barrel offering, but in this case the sum is even greater than the parts. Together these bring a perfect balance of bright, vibrant flavors and aromas from the 12 and 16-year-old barrels combined with the oak tones and aged expressions from the 19-year-old batch," says Master Distiller Brent Elliott. As a non-core range limited edition, once this bourbon is gone, it’s gone forever.

About Woodford Reserve

The Woodford Reserve Distillery sits on what was once an old Distillery founded by Elijah and his son, Oscar Pepper, in the 1800s. Years later, under the stewardship of Oscar and Master Distiller James Crow, their distillery reformed and modernized producing whiskey in the United States — the distillery revolutionized the concepts of sour mash and yeast propagation.

Today, the distillery is among Kentucky's oldest and smallest bourbon distilleries. Nestled in the heart of the Commonwealth's thoroughbred country, it's the only place you'll find bourbon and horses maturing side by side. It's also one of a handful of spirits companies in the world to own a cooperage and craft its barrels, allowing for ultimate precision when creating exact toast and char specifications.

About Jameson

You'd be hard-pressed to find a more iconic name in the Irish whiskey world than "Jameson". The Jameson tradition dates all the way back to 1740, when John Jameson was born into a family whose motto, "Sine Metu"("Without Fear"), was earned through the family's courage in fighting pirates on the high seas during the 1500s.

John Jameson himself was a living embodiment of Sine Metu, and his ancestors' bravery inspired in John a boldness that led him not only to open his own distillery in the latter 18th century but also to pioneer the technique of triple-distilling whiskey — now the gold standard in the Irish whiskey industry. John Jameson lived to be 83 — an impressive feat for someone born in the 18th century — and his descendants John II, John III, and John IV all honored his legacy by leading the distillery well into the 20th century.

About Irish Whiskey

Contrary to popular belief that Scots invented whisk(e)y, Irish whiskey was mentioned almost a century before its Scottish brother.

Its origin comes from the perfume distilling monks who decided to tweak the recipe a bit, creating Irish whiskey.

Irish whiskey doesn’t have a lot of rules and regulations to be considered “pure” and can be made with various grains and processes, as long as it is aged for at least three years in wooden casks and has a max ABV of 94.8%.

About Four Gate Outer Loop Orbit Batch 2 Bourbon Whiskey

Four Gate Whiskey Company started releasing its small-batch expressions with innovative finishes in 2019, gaining much critical acclaim from the start. Batches 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8 all received Whisky Advocate scores of 90 points or higher, and various well-regarded writers and online reviewers named batches 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 10 amongst the top 10 American whiskeys of 2019 and 2020.

Their second release Outer Loop Orbit is no exception. After looking at and smelling casks together with William Hornaday at Kelvin Cooperage, Straub and D'Antoni picked what were originally orange curaçao barrels that a local distiller used to finish a batch of botanical gin. The curaçao's sticky sweetness and gin's sharpness immediately reminded them of the famous tangy drink the astronaut John Glenn drank in the 80s and they thought it would be beautifully complemented with a bourbon. A blend of 5.5YO Kentucky Straight Bourbon and a 12YO High-Rye Kentucky Straight Bourbon was put to rest for a month and the result was mind-blowing. Bottled at 120.3 proof, non-chill filtered and with only 2,402 bottles released, this bourbon has been described as out of this world. It owes its name to the Outer Loop street in Louisville where Kelvin Cooperage is located and to John Glenn who was the first American to orbit the Earth.

About Four Gate Whiskey Company

In 2018 Bill Straub and Bob D'Antoni, both whiskey enthusiasts, founded the Four Gate Whiskey Company in Kentucky and launched their mission to release extra small batches of unique combinations of whiskey and finish barrels. Specializing in sourced wh iskey blends and partnering with Kelvin Cooperage, a family-owned barrel supplier founded in 1963 in Scotland and currently based in Louisville, the combinations of quality whiskey blends and used barrels they put together are truly ecclectic. From bourbon finished in cognac and dark rum casks to split stave casks, there is really no idea too wild for Four Gate and they make it work.

About Four Gate Split Stave By Kelvin Batch 4 Bourbon Whiskey

Four Gate Whiskey Company started releasing its small-batch expressions with innovative finishes in 2019, gaining much critical acclaim from the start. Batches 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8 all received Whisky Advocate scores of 90 points or higher, and various well-regarded writers and online reviewers named batches 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 10 amongst the top 10 American whiskeys of 2019 and 2020.

Four Gate Whiskey Company’s Release #4, Split Stave™ by Kelvin is a Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey finished in innovative Split Stave™ casks designed and produced exclusively for Four Gate by Kelvin Cooperage. The casks for this release were built by breaking down a series of medium toast casks, a series of #2 char casks, and a series of #4 char casks, and reassembling them, alternating toasted staves and #2 char staves on some barrels, and toasted and #4 char staves on others. These barrels were then filled with a blend of a 5.5-year-old Kentucky straight bourbon and a 12-year-old Kentucky straight bourbon, and left to rest for five months. The whiskey was bottled uncut and unfiltered at 115.6 proof. Only 2,700 bottles of this inaugural Split Stave™ by Kelvin release were produced.

Dark cocoa powder with hints of creamy crème brûlée on the nose usher in oak, sweet custard and cinnamon on the palate. The finish is intense, long and rich, with the oak notes intermingling with dark chocolate and earthy tobacco.
